The Psychology of Color

Color has been a major source of study by psychologists for several decades. The advertising industry has used and still uses this knowledge of color to influence our buying decisions. Interior decorators use this to help us design a most comfortable home, a stimulating work environment, a peaceful prison. Color influences how we feel, how we look, and what we do.

A best selling book several years ago influenced my life. It was Color Me Beautiful. This book, now difficult to find, taught me and millions of other women how to create a wardrobe that made us more beautiful. We draped ourselves in different swatches of material to determine if we were a Winter, Summer, Spring, or Autum color type. Once we learned, it was much easier to plan and buy a wardrobe. As a Winter, which most of us are, I learned to wear true primary colors or frosted colors and avoid secondary colors as they turned my skin color a very drab undesirable color..

Another book that impacted my life was The Psychology of Color, also difficult to find. This material contained a test to see which colors we liked and which colors we disliked. It went on to go over the personality styles of people based upon these choices. It was amazing to see that it really worked for me and many friends and associates. Are you a blue conservative type, a red fiery type, a green peace type? If you "hate" a color how does this impact your life?

The Chakras

In recent years, I have come across more information relating to the power that color has on our lives. This information has not come from traditional academic sources, it has come from Eastern ways of thought. It is interesting to note that much information considered by Westerners to be mystical fits directly in with research that we do not dispute.

The Chakras are believed to be energy centers that influence our lives. Each energy center is controlled by a color family. Depending on the source of information you read, you will discover that there are seven to ten (or more) such energy centers. The Sterling Rose discusses these energy centers and how we can use them to better our lives when this theme is chosen by a host/ess.
